Inspiration From Xing's Lecture

As mentioned in lecture, the Azuma House was designed by Ando Tadao, which was built in concrete with a simple form.
"In its simple but rich spatial composition, in its expression of enclosure, and in the way light gives character to daily-life spaces, this house encapsulates an image of my architecture."
— Tadao Ando. Tadao Ando, Buildings Projects Writings. New York: Rizzoli, 1984. p26.

First Attampt IN Design room narrative

Room Narrative: A studio for a teenager photographer who has morbid curiosity of observing outside world.
My Charactor description: A teenager who is sick and introverted, has a morbid curiosity of observing outside, such as pedestrians walking on the streets and listening to the voice from outside. That is whole world that he can be knowing. But he physically has been confined by himself in the room.He is crazy about people's actions, expressions, and their minds, and the building cross the street. He is trying to discover out of his observations. He has hope and eagers to reach the accomplishment. The way he observes the world is just LIKE that astronomer does in the painting.

Painting Analysis

Chosen painting: THE ASTRONOMER by Jan Vermeer

A fabric is coming up as a foreground in a flowery texture in a strong color tone. Part of it is put on one side of the desk and the rest of it tends to the ground and nearly falls. The astronomer wears a green color scholarly dressing gown, and his left hand grabs the corner and makes the fabric stable. His body is closed to the desk and sitting on the chair. He is extremely concentrated on his working with the staring eyes on the celestial globe. His facial expression tells that he may have a big discovery on the astronomy. Vermeer perhaps had a wish to make an allegory on the science. The window is in front of him that is well-framed and quite classic with the arch on the top. Light can get through the window without the curtain covered. There is a cupboard at back as a background in the painting. According to the history research, the astronomer in this painting was imitated by Anton van Leeuwenboed, who was the inventor of a microscope, and a master at astronomy and navigation. “The astronomer” depicts a man who is trying hard in scientific discovery and new revolution in astronomy. A kind of human fascination is being revealed by the painting. The total color tone is warm. The golden light shines up the whole room, especially the desk area, which I think implies a hope the scientist looking forward. Everything is highly detailed drawn by Vermeer.
Spatial Narrative: A secret room for a kid, who has a morbid curiosity of observing outside world.
The concpt that I transfer from the painting is How human fascination embodies in exploring the world, even outer space by logical thinking and observaton.

Final Submission- Poche Drawing

This Poche rendering drawing on plan and sectons, the of point of doing that is to emphasis the relationships inside. The functons of the villa can be showed on the drawing and it also moves you around the house. The roof, walls, windows and the chimney, all these key elements in the building interact with together and make a comfortable atmosphere for architect's mother.
The techniques of this drawing is based on watercolor and pencil.
This poche drawing has the similar layout as above. The idea is about bird eye view of the villa and uncovering each level to show the movements of the architecture. The roof has been drawn in the middle with the trees around and it also shows the site of the villa. And I draw the upper level plan on the top and the groud level in the bottom. Those shadows represent the lights and structure geometrically. I used different grey colors with the shadows which have the sense of the height of the structure. And the building is gettring more tangible.
This Poche drawing is trying to talk about one of the key concepts of the villa, which is the parapeted facade. This is front facade facing to north and the notion of the balance is also shown in the drawing. I used different pencils to render the facade perspectively and I drew the trees as the background to make different layers in the drawing and the presence of that to give a sense of the depth.
This poche has quite big contrast in the color tone. It clearly shows the structure through the plan, section and elevation. I drew the poche in this way, because it could give me a 3-dementional thought of this villa. If I put the plan horizontally right under the secton and elevation drawing, the whole building will be evoked by all exposed details.

Final Submission-Parti Drawings

The parti drawings embody the primarily ideas about the design. For the Mother's House project, Robert Venturi designed from the complexity and contradiction into the building.
The way he accommodated the space and the circulations of the villa are both generic and particular. In the sense of villa, Vanna Venturi has all the functions and usages, however, he played the tricks inside the building and arranged the rooms in the complex way.

First Attamp of drawing PARTI & POCHE

These are first two weeks drawings on the vanna venturi villa project. For the Parti understanding, I started with some key words such as geometry, circulation and enclosure etc to embody the villa in an architectural level thoughts. I tried to understand how robert venturi distinguish the space, how it works and how did his concepts symbolized. For the Poche, I prefer to play with the lights inside the building and then the structure would come out.
